1. To be considered for JapaneseGovernment Scholarship, one has to be less than or 35 years old at the time of commencement of studies. Else, one ought to be lucky like me to be sponsored privately.$ @7 s/ j7 `: z/ D8 t

The duration of postgraduate studies is relatively strict (Master - 2 years, and PhD - 3 years). Extensions are granted only in few cases and as a result of circumstances obviously beyond the control of a student and or professor. The PhD degree is not by thesis alone. Papers ought to be published in peered-reviewed journals and within stipulated times before the degree is awarded. PhD students could be graduated after 2 years of residence if a certain number of papers have been published, depending on the University, Faculty or Department." F$ B; v/ y- b' j

3. Professors generally consider students as partners. Therefore, supervision/direction is
practically nihil. Even as a fresh foreign student, one is expected to find his or her own way in the lab without the assistance of anyone.+ `7 U5 b7 [& G# K0 e- a8 E. V
$ c, U1 t* t3 Y( Q% Z6 f. q
4. Very little training in research methods/design, report writing, computer literacy, etc. is offered.

5. Knowledge of English and other foreign languages is not adequate for even basic conversation among the majority of professors, students and the people in general. Therefore, prospective students should be very careful if a prospective professor “swears”
]that one can conveniently work and be supervised in English. This lack of English knowledge restricts communication among Japanese and foreign students. Once admitted, always make the first move to communicate and the Japanese colleagues will talk back as much as they can. However, be certain that you and Japanese counterparts have a common understanding of every issue.

6. Before admission, be careful not to fall into the hands of any professor who may not be working directly in your chosen field of interest. Such incidents are very common in Japan. This is mainly due to some Japanese Professors desiring to enrol international students at all cost in order to enhance their image and even ensure the sustainability of their laboratories in some cases.

7Interaction between Japanese professors of the same field of studies in the same university is not common. Thus, several laboratories professing the same research interests exist in the same University or even in the same Department. However, be careful once enrolled: in order not to cause any dissatisfaction in your professor, actively seek his or her permission before making contacts with other professors, especially when seeking their advice, support or explanation on issues that are related to your thesis. If you should have the chance to meet, never talk disfavourably about a Japanese professor or staff to another Japanese professor, staff or student. Even if they are enemies, the former will soon inform the latter of what you have told him or her.

8. There is no room for other views in academic debates in Japan - once a professor takes a line, “faithful and loyal” students should follow suit, even if the professor is obviously wrong. This is deeply rooted in the Japanese culture; the young (disciple) always follows the old (master).

9. The standard working period in the day is 9 am - 9 pm; with only 1 hour lunch break in the afternoon. Therefore, reporting after 9 am or going home before 9 pm makes professors unhappy and even angry.

10. There is nothing like weekends or public holidays for students, except the traditional Golden Weeks when many Japanese visit families, hometowns and friends.

_11. Professors are so busy with activities outside the university that the few “who care” make allowance to meet students for any discussion only in the night hours, weekends and public holidays.& |' K& ?3 H3 i7 @" q

12. Students are required to be always present in the lab, even if there is nothing to be done. It is acceptable to be in the lab and surf the internet or sleep. Only “lazy” students stay at home, go for leisure or vacation. This phenomenon is the same in Japanese offices and workplaces - workers spend most of their time after the official working hours and weekends at the work place, especially when the boss is still around. out for late night drinking together. When a worker, especially the male, goes home just after the usual close of work, the spouse may be thinking that either he has a problem at the workplace or the husband is simply lazy!' l3 K, J) p4 \+ D

13. Labs and offices are very, very crowded; and very noisy due to loud and non-discrete official telephone calls and chats among students and staff across rooms. Eating on one’s desk in the lab or office is not an offence in Japan. In fact, there are no “tea/coffee” rooms. Therefore, lunch-packs are eaten right on one’s desk. Foreigners have to
_quickly re-tune their mind in order to adapt and cope with the noise, smell and other
inconveniences.

14. Traditionally, Japanese do not write long essays. Therefore, treatises are not encouraged. Graphs, diagrams, photographs and tables with short footnotes are often all that is required. However, as a foreign student, insist and write your reports, papers and thesis conform to renowned journal standards and formats.

e15. Just as a reminder, the Japanese language (NIHON-GO) is phoenetic and Roman alphabets are not used to write the language. Rather, Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana are used. These are closely related to Chinese characters. Very little time is given to foreign students to master the Japanese language.2 [/ [5 ?# J0 e

_16. Everything is edible as long as it is not poisonous! Raw fish and other foods may not be appetizing at first sight. However after the first bite, you will always order it. Japanese eat their food with such an enthusiasm that all sorts of “noises” are made in the act. This could be strange to foreigners. When you arrive in Japan, learn how to use HASHI
U(bamboo chop-sticks) very fast. Cutlery set is not always available in many restaurants. The exception is to be given a spoon for curry rice.7 B% G& S. v, O/ d6 N0 ]

17. Are you shy of your nakedness when with strangers? If not, try relaxing in the many public hot pools that are available all over Japan (ONSEN,30-45°C). “They say” that it is nice!# T. W' X% \1 _$ T6 P1 s2 {

18. Japanese do not say either no or yes directly.Therefore, foreigners have to figure out the actual responses every time.

19. Are you a non-smoker, drink little or take no alcohol and anti-adult night entertainment? If yes to any of these, you may feel like an outcast among your group or lab mates!
20. Houses and room sizes are comparatively small; they are pre-fabricated or constructed from light wood and with poor heating systems, if any. Pairs of foot wears are always left at the entrance of houses, rooms and in some offices. Pairs of slippers, meant for such areas, may be used instead. Or, it is normal to walk around barefooted with only a pair of socks on.2 g/ C1 u: k" ^$ ?

21. Sexual harassment is a vaguely defined crime in Japanese law books. It is what the “victim” says that carries weight, not the intention or motive of the “criminal”. Therefore, be extra careful and do not take any one for granted; even when he or she consensually says yes.0 w* g* G: F1 \0 A0 ?" |

22. Socially, women stay and take charge of householdsand young children whilst men work for long hours. Having leisure hours with the family is a very minimal activity for a Japanese worker. Couple and lovers kissing or holding hands in public is considered a western decadent. Marriage is more of a social requirement. Love, in the western sense, is a strange word inJapan. Thus, if you are looking for love, not in Japan! In the Japanese system of things, wives take charge of the check book and the bank account. Men, when The hierarchy at a workplace is based more on who was appointed first, not on the merit of academic qualifications. Thus, it is not odd in Japan to find a high school graduate or technician heading a technical research lab and doctorate degree holders working under him or her. Congratulating one another after a hard day’s work is culturally in order. This could well be celebrated with a late night drinking session.+ X$ ]0 w0 y6 o* B. M; W; n4 J
24. Japanese are living harmoniously with their environment; on only about 30% of the country (the rest consists of unstable hills and mountains). Conservation and sustainability of natural resources are major every day issues among all.[

25. When visiting a Japanese home, it is culturally polite, and as a matter of goodwill, to carry along a present from your locality.

Japanese are very sensitive to comments made about them by foreigners. However, they are such an innovative people that the jokes shown in the photographs under “ONLY IN JAPAN” are often made about them.

At the end of it all, do not be surprised to be asked “what type of designation” should be written as your degree. As one’s degree is being prepared for graduation, qualified students have the option to choose DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING (DEng),DOCTOR OF SCIENCE (DSc) and DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD). In fact, PhD is a “strange” title in the Japanese degree system. It is only meant for foreign students to take away to their home countries. The difference is that foreign students have the option to choose the desired type of degree designation in Japan and all are weighted equally when presented for jobs.
